HOW BOXING DAY GOT ITS NAME

The Origins of Boxing Day: A Long and Varied History

The day after Christmas is always a national holiday in some countries. It is even called Boxing Day. Many of us, however, do not know the reason for this celebration and the reason it is known as ‘Boxing Day’.

This day does not have anything to do with the sportof Boxing. This day is a day to sit with members of your family and share gifts. It is a day for gifting basically. The day comes late in the months of December, mostly a day after Christmas.

For most of us, this day is not significant. What we fail to recognize is that this day of gifting carries a major Christmas ideal, giving and sharing love.

The Global Reach of Boxing Day: Celebrations and Traditions Around the World

Where is the name ‘Boxing Day’ gotten from? I will be giving you the three ways it got this name. Every one of these ways is right.

  • THE NAME IS DUE TO THE GIFTS SHARED ON THE DAY

The Christmas Box is what a gift is called in some countries in Europe and some states in the US. This gifting exercise births this name given to the day. The Christmas Box in the United Kingdom, is given to workers by their bosses and these workers in turn give whatever gifts are in the boxes to their family members when they get home.

  • IT IS GOTTEN FROM THE WILL TO GIVE

Many churches get boxes where members are to donate gifts. They place the boxes around their churches on the day of Christmas. The boxes are opened the following day (the Boxing Day).

  • IT IS GOTTEN ALSO FROM THE SAILORS

A sealed box is kept by captains and sailors aboard when they are at sea in order to bring for themselves, good luck. These boxes contain money. And when they get to have a safe trip, this box is given to a priest who in turn gives from the box to the poor the day after Christmas.
